An Adult Child’s Guide:

Navigating Long-Term Care Conversations with Reluctant Parents

If you’ve felt frustrated—or even scared—you’re not alone.

This is one of the most common challenges adult children face.

And here’s the truth: it’s not just resistance…it’s psychology.

You’ve brought it up more than once.

“Mom, we should talk about long-term care…”

“Dad, what’s the plan if something happens?”

And the response is often the same:

“We’re fine.”

“We’ll figure it out.”

“Not now.”

Why Aging Parents Resist Planning

(And Why It’s Not What You Think)

Most parents aren’t avoiding planning because they don’t care. They’re avoiding it because of how the brain processes aging and loss.

Behavioral science

shows that people naturally avoid decisions tied to loss of independence (loss aversion). Planning for long-term care feels like admitting decline—and that’s deeply uncomfortable.

Research also shows

that as we age, complex decisions feel heavier and more overwhelming (cognitive load). What seems like a simple conversation to you may feel like a major emotional burden to them.

Helpful resources to better understand this:

Understanding this changes everything. It shifts the conversation from “Why are they being difficult?” to “How can I meet them where they are?”

The Stages of Readiness

(Why Timing Matters More Than Logic)

Most families don’t realize there are stages to willingness:

  1. Denial – “Nothing is wrong.”

  2. Awareness – “Maybe someday…”

  3. Acceptance – “We should probably talk about this.”

  4. Action – “Let’s put a plan in place.”

The challenge? Many adult children try to force action when their parent is still in denial.

This creates tension—and often shuts the conversation down.

Instead, small, consistent conversations that reduce pressure tend to move parents forward naturally.

Why Waiting for a Crisis Changes Everything

Here’s what we see every day in elder law: → A fall → A diagnosis → A hospital stay.

That’s when the conversation finally happens. But by then, options are limited.

Without early planning:

  • Medicaid eligibility strategies may no longer work

  • Assets may need to be spent down quickly

  • Adult children often step in financially or logistically

  • Decisions feel rushed and overwhelming

With early planning, families have time. And time creates options.

A Better Way to Approach the Conversation

Instead of pushing, shift your role from “decision-maker” → to “guide.”

Try this approach:

  • Ask questions instead of giving answers

  • Share stories of other families (social proof reduces resistance)

  • Focus on maintaining independence—not losing it

  • Keep conversations short and low-pressure

Example:

Instead of: “We need to plan…NOW.”

Try: “I’ve been learning about ways adults keep control of their care decisions—may I share something with you?”

This can reduce defensiveness and open a door.

You Don’t Have to Navigate This Alone

At Silvas Law, we help families have these conversations every day—with clarity, compassion, and a plan that protects both independence and financial stability.

If you’re trying to move your family forward, the first step isn’t pushing harder—it’s understanding better.
